Data Communication Solutions (DCS) just returned from the Collaborate14 in Las Vegas held April 7-11 . The buzz on the show floor seemed to focus on cloud computing and security as well as Analytics/Big Data and options for your specific industries.
Cloud Computing: Cloud computing’s popularity continues to grow (this is where your application is hosted somewhere else such as with Yahoo or Google mail). People like it because it’s easier to add capacity but dislike the uncertainty of all a company’s business records being elsewhere. Since Oracle also makes the hardware (Sun servers), their support is somewhat tainted. It seems to us that unmodified applications will move to the cloud, but those that are customized or have many connections to other applications (such as EDI and B2B) may not move.
Security: What more needs to be said? There are daily headlines citing failures. It’s an arms race with the villainous with no end in sight. Most are resigned to adding security as headlines occur.
Analytics/Big Data: Here’s a solution waiting for a problem. Until we know about the unknown unknowns, progress will be incremental. For example, knowing what is selling in Marshall, MN, does not help for this season. Next years’ design is based upon general preference patterns.
Options: There are many profit making applications evolving that are industry focused. For example, the E-Business Suite component for food producers has companies offering mini-components that roll out new UCC/GS1 initiatives such as country of origin for labeling. These are semi-productized, yet valuable because they are focused upon your industry. DCS EDI specialists can help you with the B2B connection portion.
