Alert: Staples Changing SKU Length

Staples is changing the length of their SKUs. Vendors need to make sure their maps are built to handle variable length Customer Item Numbers.

If you adhere to the EDI X12 standard then changes are not required.

Please take note of the following developments:

  1. Staples will expand the length of the SKU field from 6 to 9 digits.
  2. Staples may begin to issue 7 digit SKUs as soon as mid-December 2013.
  3. Once all 7 digit SKUs are used, Staples will issue 8, and then 9 digit SKUs.  Staples will not immediately issue 9 digit SKUs.

In the future, the Staples SKU can be up to a maximum length of 9 digits (left justified in EDI).

If you adhere to the current Staples EDI standards containing 6 digit SKUs, you will need to make changes to the following documents:

  • Purchase Orders (850)
  • Purchase Order Changes (860)
  • Ship Notice (856, ASN)
