Maintaining your Gentran:Director and/or Gentran:Server Databases

Over time, you may notice your Gentran install does not run as smooth as it once did. The likely culprit is a database that has become corrupt with bad data. The bad data is referred to as “orphan records.” Why? When you delete entries outside of the Interchange Summary section, you create orphan records in the database that will affect performance over time. These records have lost their connection with Gentran and cause read and writes to the database from Gentran to slow causing delays in production.

Fortunately, IBM/Sterling provides a tool called GICheck to help keep your database running smoothly and free from orphan records. This tool is intended to be used in conjunction with your normal database maintenance.

Here are few tips regarding GICheck:

  • The GICheck.exe program should be stored in your \Bin directory
  • It is version specific
  • Take note of the Recommended System Limitations.  Gentran:Director sits on an Access Database and IBM/Sterling suggest keeping your InDrawer and OutDrawer counts below 7500 each to avoid database problems.
  • You should run it at the prescribed time intervals detailed in the document referenced below
